Type 1, concrete, asphalt and topsoil calculator

Work out volumes and tonnages for Type 1 sub-base, concrete, asphalt and topsoil, with a waste allowance and concrete truck loads.

Free, no sign-in. Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere — it's all worked out in your browser.

Enter the dimensions and depth.

How this works

Volume = area × depth (or length × width × depth), with depth entered in millimetres. With waste = volume × (1 + waste %). Tonnes = volume with waste × density.

Default densities (tonnes per m³ — change them to match your supplier): Type 1 sub-base 2.1 · Concrete 2.4 · Asphalt 2.35 · Topsoil 1.5. Truck size defaults to 6 m³.

These are planning figures. Always check delivery tickets and your supplier's data.

FAQs

How many tonnes of Type 1 do I need per m³?

About 2.1 tonnes per m³ once compacted. Check your supplier's figure, and add a waste allowance.

How do I work out concrete truck loads?

Divide the volume (with waste) by the truck size and round up. A standard ready-mix truck carries about 6 m³; smaller loads can cost extra.

What waste allowance should I use?

Commonly 5–10% for aggregates and concrete, more on uneven formation. Use what your company normally allows.

Why is my topsoil tonnage different from the quarry's?

Topsoil density varies a lot with moisture and how loose it is. Change the density to match your supplier's figure.
